Farm2Export – Ammonia: Integrated nutrient supply chains result in a meaningful reduction in national ammonia emissions.
Published:April 8, 2026
We are pleased to announce the release of our report Farm2Export: Ammonia, developed in collaboration with the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH).
This is the first of a number of nutrient focussed reports of this type we will publish.
This study provides the first full assessment of ammonia emissions across our Farm2Export supply chain, from slurry separation through to bio‑based fertiliser production and examines its role in supporting the transition Northern Ireland to a circular nutrient economy.
The Farm2Export project, launched in 2023 under the Sustainable Utilisation of Livestock Slurry programme (SULS) and partly funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, is developing an integrated nutrient recovery system for Northern Ireland. This system combines on-farm slurry management with processing at anaerobic digestion plants to recover and redistribute nutrients efficiently.
The ammonia study finds that our Farm2Export nutrient supply chain has the potential to deliver substantial reductions in ammonia emissions in Northern Ireland. However, adherence to the Interim and Proposed Operational Protocol for evaluating ammonia impacts on designated sites can constrain wider adoption of manure processing technologies – if those systems are not mobile.
We believe this report provides insights to update guidance that forms part of Northern Irelands planning processes, formalising the impact of manure separation on ammonia emissions to create a clear pathway for sustainable deployment of technologies.
We encourage policymakers, industry partners, and the wider agri‑food sector to engage with the findings and explore the opportunities presented by our Farm2Export model.
